Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson
Nancy Wilson, a jazz singer and a three-time Grammy Award winner was born in Chillicothe, Ohio 20 February 1937, to Olden Wilson an ironworker who had worked for a long period as housekeeper. Nancy Wilson was the only born child at the age of 6. Nancy was heavily influenced in her early years by the music her dad enjoyed and loved playing when she was at his home. It was clear that she wanted to be a singer by the time she was just four years old. She began developing her talent by singing in the church choir. The show was on television at the age of 15 and started being a regular on the tv show Skyline Melodies while still in high school. That same year, Nancy began working in nightclubs. Nancy was just 17 when she graduated highschool. After enrolling at Ohio Central State College - which is now Central State University - for only one semester Nancy went on to become professional performers. Her first record was recorded in 1956 by Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. The group performed with her throughout 1956 and 1957. Nancy's initial Dot Records recording was made when she was a member of the big band of the Carolyn Club. Cannonball Adderley told her that she needed to relocate in New York to further her career, and she moved to The Big Town at the end of the year 1959. Within one month, she got a gig singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club located on Boston Road in The Bronx the place where her agent heard her voice and agreed to sign her. His agent signed her with Capitol in the year 1960. The year she made her debut was the same year. Guess who saw today. The records she released were also successful. Capitol released 5 Nancy Wilson albums in two years. At first, she focused on rhythm and blues under Adderley's influence, she began to move away from R&B and began to embrace music from jazz and torch. Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley as well as their 1962 partnership led her to the top of the charts. She had her breakthrough song Tell Me the Truth by 1963. This brought her a gig in New York's Coconut Grove the premier night club in America that year, and she became a star.
