Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson
Nancy Wilson is a Grammy Award winning jazz singer. Her birth date was February 20, 1937, in Chillicothe Ohio, to Olden Wilson, who was employed in an ironworks, and Lillian Ryan, a former domestic employee. Nancy is the youngest out of 6 siblings. The music passion of her father and his collection of records at home were a huge influence on Nancy as a young girl. When she was just four year old, she realized she would be a singer. Her talent developed by her involvement in the choir at church. She was a finalist on a talent show on TV in her 15th year and then began being a regular on the tv program Skyline Melodies while still in high school. At the age of 15years old, Nancy started her career in night clubs. Nancy was kicked out of Central State University in Ohio after being matriculating for a full year. In 1956, she recorded her debut album with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band with whom she toured from 1956 between 1956 and 1958. Nancy's first Dot Records recording was made during her time in the big band of the Carolyn Club. Cannonball Adderley told her that she needed to relocate to New York to further her career, and she moved there to The Big Town in the year 1959. In less than a month, she was singing in The Blue Morocco Night Club which is located at Boston Road near The Bronx. Adderley's representative was able to hear her perform and promptly agreed to sign her. A contract was formalized by Capitol Records in the year 1960. The year was 1960 when she debuted with the song. Guess who? Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson records in just two years. With the help of Adderley's influence she shifted her focus from R&B to jazz. Nancy Wilson's collaboration in 1962 together with Cannonball Adderley propelled her to the top and, in 1963, she had her debut hit Tell Me the Truth. Following that year it led to her being invited to the New York's Coconut Grove - the top nightclub in America.
