The jazz musician Nancy Wilson a three-time Grammy Award-winner was born on February 20, 1937, in Chillicothe Ohio to iron-worker Olden Wilson and the former Lillian Ryan who worked as a housekeeper. Nancy was the first of six children. Nancy was heavily influenced in her early years by the music her dad was a fan of and played at home. As young as four years old, she knew that she was going to be a star in the singing world. She developed her talent through her participation in the church choir. In high school the singer was regularly featured with Skyline Melodies. The same year when she was working, she began performing in nightclubs. Nancy, then 17, completed high school and was enrolled in Ohio Central State College (now Central State University) for a year before quitting to pursue a career as a musician. In 1956 she released her first album with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. They performed together from 1956 through 1958. Nancy recorded her first album on Dot Records during the time she spent in this band. Cannonball Aderley suggested she relocate into New York so as to improve her career. In 1959 Nancy made the move in The Big Town. The agent of Adderley heard about her at The Blue Morocco Night Club, Boston Road, The Bronx and she signed. within a month after arriving in New York City. The agent he was working with signed her up to Capitol in 1960. Her debut was that year. Guess Who? Her albums were a hit and Capitol issued five Nancy Wilson albums in two years. In the era of Adderley Wilson's direction, she began to focus on R&B however she soon switched towards torch and jazz. Nancy Wilson's 1962 collaboration in 1962 with Cannonball Adderley propelled her to the top, and in 1963 she scored her debut hit Tell Me the Truth. The following year, she was invited to perform at New York's Coconut Grove, the most famous club in America.
